The Young Spinner Makes Surprise Selection in England's Test Series Squad
The English team has opted for a twelve-player squad just two days ahead of the opening Test match, with Shoaib Bashir securing a unexpected spot.
The 22-year-old’s selection suggests that the tourists will wait until the day of the initial match to decide whether the venue pitch favor a pace-heavy attack or the addition of a spinner.
Both pace bowlers are part of the 12-man group, showing there are no concerns about either fast bowler's condition.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the bowling group, with the latter most likely to be omitted if the spinner enters the starting XI.
Ground Conditions Favor Pace Bowlers
The England coach had been anticipated to choose an all-seam attack on a venue that has hosted five previous Tests.
During these matches, the majority of dismissals have been taken by pace bowling, with only 40 to spin bowling.
Of those spin dismissals, the veteran spinner has taken the bulk, while all visiting spinners combined have only eight.
On a ground known for its pace and bounce, and whose curator, the pitch preparer, stated that these traits are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a team loaded with fast bowlers is still the probable choice.
Alternative Choices Considered
Previously there was speculation that the all-rounder could be parachuted into the side to provide some spin while also strengthening the batting lineup.
But the coach has opted to keep faith with the young spinner, having said previously that he would be his first-choice spinner for the Ashes.
In July, Nathan Lyon described the English spinner as “decent,” saying that “in my eyes, Jack Leach is still the English best spinner.”
“This is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for people who haven’t done it in the previous in these conditions,” Lyon said of slow bowling in Australian Tests.
“I won't let my secrets out so they perform and excel out here.”
