The royal figure relinquishes his honor as the Duke.

Royal figure under scrutiny
Prince Andrew has encountered growing attention over his links with the financier.

The royal is giving up his designations, including the York's Duke, he has declared in a personal statement.

He has been under mounting scrutiny over his associations with disgraced financier Epstein, with requests for the monarchy to take measures against him.

That now seems to have resulted in the royal deciding to voluntarily give up his honors and to give up membership of the Order of the Garter.

In his announcement he said he continued to "firmly dispute the accusations against me".

"In consultation with the monarch, and my immediate and broader family, we have decided the persistent claims about me divert from the responsibilities of His Majesty and the monarchy," said a statement from Prince Andrew.

"I have chosen, as I always have, to put my duty to my kin and nation first.

"I uphold my choice five years ago to step back from royal engagements.

"With the King's consent, we believe I must now go a additional measure. I will therefore no longer hold my title or the honours which have been conferred upon me. As I have said before, I vigorously deny the accusations against me."

He has faced a number of issues, among them a court case he settled with the plaintiff, doubts about his finances and his involvement with an suspected foreign agent.

He will remain a prince - but will discontinue to be the York's Duke, a designation granted from his the late Queen, the former monarch.

Andrew had already ceased to be a "participating figure" and had given up the use of his His Royal Highness designation and no longer appeared at state occasions. His role now will be even more lessened.

His previous partner will be known as Ferguson and no longer Duchess of York, but their children will persist to have the honor of princesses.

Prince Andrew has encountered strong scrutiny over his associations with notorious figure Jeffrey Epstein, more recently involving doubts about when he had really severed ties.

In his BBC Newsnight interview, the royal had said that he had cut off all connections with Jeffrey Epstein after they had been seen together in the city in late 2010.

But correspondence sent in the following year later emerged indicating that the prince had in private remained in contact with Epstein, including sending a message: "Stay in contact and we'll meet again soon!"

There had been increasing displeasure in Buckingham Palace at the controversies that persisted to plague the figure.

In the coming days a posthumous memoir by Virginia Giuffre will be issued which is anticipated to bring more attention on his association with Virginia Giuffre and Jeffrey Epstein.
