The Reze Arc Movie Tops American Cinema Earnings in Opening Weekend
Has Sony done it again? Coming after the box office performance of Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which grossed more than $600 million worldwide, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has reached beyond the $100 million threshold globally, reaching a global total of over $108 million during its debut. This movie surpassed Black Phone 2 (almost $13 million) in its sophomore frame in cinemas, as well as the music documentary Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere with actor Jeremy Allen White ($9M).
Impressive American and Worldwide Earnings
The work of filmmaker Tatsuya Yoshihara, the film is a direct continuation of the initial season of Chainsaw Man. It grossed over $18 million in the U.S. after a robust $5.2 million Saturday and $4.5 million Sunday. Internationally, the animated by MAPPA film earned nearly $15 million across 46 international territories, bringing its global earnings to over $60 million through Sony distribution ($43.1 million abroad, $18.2 million domestic). The studio has not yet revealed its final earnings figure.
Benchmarks to Previous Anime Hits
Promotional firm an industry expert noted in prior discussions, contrasting the movie's expected results to the anime hit Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which earned $34 million in the U.S. and Canada in 2022 and debuted with a similar $18M domestically. The new film's debut weekend aligns with that standard, while its hundred-and-eight-million-dollar worldwide total currently tracks slightly below that movie's over $166 million overall box office. Although it’s unlikely this Chainsaw Man film will earn the box office of blockbuster Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, it remains a major victory for the distributor.
Fan Engagement Efforts Drive Performance
Sony and its subsidiary Crunchyroll have successfully utilized audience interaction to propel their leadership at the animated movie market. The movie's advertising push launched at the Anime Expo in LA in July with a discussion featuring MAPPA, exclusive activations, and Pochita-themed pictures, followed by a major presence at New York Comic Con featuring exclusive clips, lotteries for fans, and further MAPPA discussions. Moreover, organizers held an special preview for fans for the public and content creators as well after the last day of the event.
Looking Ahead
2025 stands as a big year for animated films, and for the company, which has an additional anime film releasing in 2025 in the film Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in the month of November.
