The Porcine Pardon: Pig Named Six Seven Spared by Miami Dade County Mayor.
It might not have been at the equivalent scale as granting clemency to Thanksgiving turkeys, but the Miami-Dade County mayor had her own presidential-style act this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She deserves this act of mercy. No offenses are on her docket,” Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued from the start of the beginning of a new presidential term.
“If we disregard eating six or seven apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “Let this swine have a long and happy life away from worry.”
The gathering, simultaneously observing and challenging the region’s Hispanic tradition of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The swine, donated by a Coral Gables firefighter, was christened after the modern linguistic fad of young people yelling “6-7” – originating from a musical verse – often without clear purpose. The trend became so ubiquitous that a major dictionary recently declared “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Future Secured
Six Seven the pig is now destined to live out its days at a countryside refuge “away from grills and cookware”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“This swine clemency has become a beloved tradition to open the festive period,” said the event host, in a decidedly positive message.
“It embodies the character of Miami: happy, diverse, and based in heritage that unite the community. Annually, we are honored to observe heritage and mercy in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Participants enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach fritters and Cuban coffee as they marked the pig's pardon.
