The Contents of the Case Henry Opens in Stranger Things?
For much of season 5 of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive within a psychic prison forged from the recollections of Henry Creel. The search for a way out in "Escape from Camazotz" forces them to witness again a traumatic incident from Henry's youth—an event that may just hold the means to overcome him for good.
Editor's Note: The following details significant events for the concluding episodes.
A Journey Into the Cavern
After locating Max in the world called Camazotz, Holly discovers she is taking refuge in a cave that Henry is terrified of. By leaving the lens cap on a spyglass pilfered from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the source of fear lies not within the cave. Matching her view through the cap, she and Max suddenly fall into a abandoned tunnel.
In this place, they observe a child version of Henry encounter an injured and paranoid man. As the boy offers aid, the man panics and shoots, striking Henry in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly wonders aloud. The answer is affirmative, but the act went deeper than a simple act of survival.
Like many elements this season, the truth about the encounter was first explored the theatrical production the prequel play.
The Philadelphia Experiment and Secret Science
The play reveals the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which allegedly sent a warship into a realm dubbed the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who came back in a unresponsive state with an altered blood type.
The captain's son, the future Dr. Brenner, attempted to recreate this experiment in Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker took experimental components to sell to the Soviets, who were eager to begin their own interdimensional projects. This spy in the cavern is that employee.
The Briefcase's Contents
Given what is known about the doctor's experiments, the briefcase almost certainly contained samples of the altered blood. At that moment, Henry is already bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon opening the case, causing the awakening of his powers—traits he would genetically impart to the kids under Brenner's care.
Alternatively, the container could have held dark matter that later made its way to the secret facility, where it maintains the stability of the Upside Down. The stage play explains that Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, returning hours later with a new blood type and personality. As a youth, he struggles with the control of a dark entity, reminiscent of how Will was controlled by the Mind Flayer in the past.
A Weaponized Emotion
His lasting fear of that cave highlights how profoundly traumatic the event was for him. Even as he orchestrates the Hive Mind and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy lingers. Fear is his tool, and the series is building toward a showdown between him and Will, who has deliberately faced his greatest terrors to fortify himself.
This journey has effectively disarmed Vecna. Furthermore, Will now understands what Vecna himself fears, and this may grant a decisive edge in the endgame conflict ahead.
