Seattle's Pride Celebrations Will Go Ahead During FIFA Tournament Despite Objections from Iran and Egypt

Plans for LGBTQ+ rights events and activities in Seattle amid next summer’s FIFA World Cup tournament will continue unabated, despite Iranian and Egyptian football federations voiced objections about a scheduled “Pride Match.”

Stadium Policy Alongside External Festivities

Local organizers stated clearly they are “proceeding as planned” with celebratory programming outside the stadium. These events will take place around the tournament group match between Iran and Egypt on June 26th. Furthermore, the tournament's governing body has a policy allowing Pride flags inside the match venue.

“In our role as hosts, our primary task is to get the city ready to welcome visitors for the matches and oversee the fan activities outside of the match venue,” said the vice-president of communications.

Legal Background of Formal Complaints

Same-sex relations are criminalized under Iranian law, and in Egypt, morality laws are often used to target and prosecute LGBTQ+ people. Egypt's football association declared it refused to be associated with events that “fundamentally oppose the social, religious and cultural values … in Islamic and Arab societies.” In a parallel move, the head of Iran's soccer body publicly registered “its opposition against the issue.”

The Governing Body's Position on Flags and Banners

Fifa maintains operational control over match venues on matchdays. Although its rules forbid banners and flags with political messages, it permits flags expressing “sporting and social symbols,” a category which includes the rainbow flag. This regulation was in effect at the previous tournament in Qatar and was reinforced after incidents of authorities confiscating flags.

  • The Pride Match was an idea created to highlight Seattle’s proud history of championing inclusion and equality.
  • A design contest has been commissioned to produce artwork celebrating the occasion.
  • Organizers have pledged to ensuring all fans feel welcome in the Pacific Northwest throughout the 48-team competition.

The Pacific Northwest hosts a significant largest Iranian-American communities, a thriving Egyptian diaspora, and rich communities from every competing country. “Our commitment is to guaranteeing all residents and visitors encounter the warmth, respect and dignity that defines our region,” the statement concluded.
