Information Available Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Shooting

A minimum of 16 people lost their lives and more than 40 were wounded when assailants fired on a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were admitted to medical facilities.

The deceased are still awaiting formally identified, but authorities state their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father of five children, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments before the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with five in critical condition. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
