Giants QB Wilson Fires Back at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Regarding Quarterback Remarks
New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson didn't mince words on social media this week, reacting to recent comments from his former coach Sean Payton.
"Tasteless... but not surprised...," Wilson stated on X. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."
The quarterback's remarks directly referenced the infamous bounty scandal controversy from 2009 to 2011, when Payton was coaching the Saints.
During that period, the league found that the Saints had incentivized team members for delivering hard hits on rival teams. Consequently, Payton received a suspension from the league for a full year.
What Sparked the Recent Exchange
The quarterback's reaction came after Payton delivered remarks after the Broncos' remarkable comeback win over the New York. Payton remarked that the team had "discovered new energy" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the first-string QB.
Moreover, Payton hinted that he had told team owner John Mara that he would rather facing Wilson instead of Dart.
"I was talking to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We were hoping that the switch would've happened long after our game,'" the coach stated.
Background of the Wilson-Payton Relationship
- The quarterback was traded to the Denver from Seattle in 2022 and signed a five-year, $245M contract.
- The team finished 4-11 in his first season before the team hired Payton, who was coming back to the sidelines after a period in TV commentary.
- The coach replaced Wilson late into the 2023 season, a decision that ensured the player from getting injured.
Had Wilson remained on the roster by spring 2024, his $37 million pay for the following year would have been guaranteed. Ultimately, Wilson was released, ending the ugly breakup between the player and his coach.
