A uniquely yellow-fronted residential building in the background helped us locate the video.
We are checking video footage and photographs posted earlier today that show the scene of a reported car bomb explosion that Russian officials state killed a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he later died of his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to verify the site of where the pictures were from relied on social media reports indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.
We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the unique yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex seen in the footage.
Identifying other buildings, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed where the pictures were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were recent and that the images had not been manipulated.
