‘Every minor detail – execute them’: The striker’s path from gurney to success with Athletic Bilbao
The initial occasion the Spanish forward competed in England, an 18-year-old representing Athletic Bilbao B against Bundesliga youth at the English ground in the 2015 season, he hit the target. During his subsequent match he appeared in England, against Sunderland two months later, he scored. Another occasion, against the Citizens soon after, sure enough, he scored again. When he returned to Manchester to play against the Red Devils at the sports complex in that year, he did it once more. A spectacular strike, also. “Truly,” he says, “it ranks among my finest I’ve netted.” Thus the club did what was necessary: he was replaced.
“I became very upset,” the attacker says, then chuckling. “Probably there’s a recording. We went to play United and I performed well. I wasn’t allowed to feature the latter period: my contract wasn’t finalized agreement, goals were flowing, speculation was rife, you know how it is. No confirmation on Newcastle being interested, but I recall seeing about Man United, the typical thing. I have no idea the validity, but supposing an offer came, I’d have chosen to stay at the club. I’m fortunate to be here.”

At the facility, the Basque Country, the day’s first practice is about to start; post-session, the quick travel to Loiu and a further journey to England, now to take on the Magpies in the European elite competition on midweek. Uttering the name makes Guruzeta smile. It’s turning out to be a challenging campaign for the team, partly because of the demands of their participation. Losing in stoppage time in the derby on Saturday, they have managed just one win of their past eight league games and fallen to the Gunners and Dortmund in the continental stage. However, look at the overall situation, the memorable evenings and those that lie ahead, and a sense of thankful reflection about him.
In the 36 months since he had rejoined the team, Gorka has been a final four contender in Europe, prevented from reaching a domestic final by Manchester United, and has ridden an historic vessel along the Nervión river accompanied by a huge crowd after lifting the trophy, the team’s initial silverware in a long wait. Currently he stands as the club’s leading marksman in the European competition, where they are distinctive and debuting in a decade. “This was beyond my dreams,” he admits.
He considered it difficult enough just to break into the senior squad and he was right. The son of the ex-La Real star the former professional and a season ticket holder at the team he now opposes, Gorka is from the Antiguoko academy, the local academy that nurtured Mikel Arteta, Xabi Alonso and the Bournemouth manager. His move to Athletic came at his teens but after his first-team bow in the 2018 season, he experienced a serious knee problem, dropped, a relegation and a return before he could finally secure an opportunity, making his comeback to experience the peak of the club’s history.
“Entering the youth system doubting you’ll make the first team but each step you go through you’re persisting and you can see it getting closer. You get there but … departure is necessary.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in a handful of matches between his first game and February 2019. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Several appearances at that level and I tear my cruciate.
“A massive setback but I reflect on it as a turning point because it forced me to alter the outlook. Healing from a serious ailment is difficult, but it helps. You cultivate routines new to you. It’s not about neglect, but I would go to training and then go home, typical youth behavior. In the facility, you have everything, so utilize it all. Practice, prevention. Hit the weights. With hip imbalance, address that. Assuming ankle mobility is good, make it a 12 or a 14. All the minor details: perform them.
“Among professionals you’re going to crash into players who have crashed into players 200,000 times. Highly robust. Seeing previous pictures: my legs are chicken legs. Injuries are inevitable. Current photos and it’s totally different. Injury made me see that. Sessions end, but additional work remains. Peers are prepared, really ready; no exceptions.”
Game time is essential. The striker moved in tears in that year, in his early twenties, joining the second tier. At Sabadell in that season, he scored three times in 40 games. During his Amorebieta stint in the following period, the he found his form. “Players go through it: transfers, releases. With a turnaround, effort, faith, and if one day the requirement appears for your role, they might come back for you. Preparation is key. Upon the recall, a fantasy realized. Lifting the cup, European football, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”
Little surprise he states appreciate the experience. Particularly after the previous season which, on occasions, was involved suffering. After being leading scorer with 16 in 2023-24, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
