Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several entry passages providing entry to the facility... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their valour," Healey said. "They were among numerous UK service members deployed over the holidays. This action, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces executed what it described as a "major assault" on Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an attack killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
