The daughter of ex- South African Head of State Jacob G Zuma has denied all charges to terror accusations at the beginning of her court case in the harbor city of the city of Durban.

Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, 43, is being prosecuted over remarks she posted on social media in the past during fatal protests in South Africa that followed the detention of her dad.

A seven-day period of disorder in several parts of the country in mid-2021, including looting and fire-setting, resulted in at least 300 killed and caused damage worth an approximate $2.8bn (£2.2bn).

Zuma-Sambudla has been alleged of encouraging this violence and faces allegations of encouragement to commit terror-related activities and civil unrest.

Context of the Case

The protests were focused in the provinces of the Gauteng province and KwaZulu-Natal and were triggered by the ex-leader's detention for ignoring a court order to testify at an probe into claims of corruption while he was holding office.

She has consistently denied the allegations against her, with her lawyer in the past labelling the prosecution's case as unsubstantiated.

She has also frequently claimed the accusations against her were an bid to settle political grievances with her father after he founded his own political party and competed against the ruling party.

Endorsement and Case Arguments

This was reinforced by the Zuma foundation, which stated the proceedings was an "abuse of power" and a "organized effort" of "politically motivated and familial harassment" against the former president and his family.

A few of followers from her political organization, her party, appeared outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her father and other party leaders attended the court sessions inside.

The defense has argued that the testimony presented by government lawyers is inadequate and fails to provide compelling evidence for a guilty verdict.

Main Aspects of the Legal Proceedings

  • Digital statements from 2019 form the core of the prosecution's argument
  • Deadly demonstrations in July 2021 resulted in major fatalities and financial damage
  • The defendant faces multiple counts of provocation to unrest
  • Court trials are projected to carry on for multiple days

The trial continues as the prosecution and defense present their evidence before the judge in what is anticipated to be a closely watched judicial process with major politically charged ramifications for South Africa.
